Title: Mara
Genre: Horror
Length: 1hr 38m
When I first saw the trailer for this movie it didn’t really appeal to me but I decided to watch it anyway. It’s currently being shown on Netflix and I have to say it was pretty scary. It’s a story about Kate Fuller who’s a criminal psychologist investigating the death of a man who appears to have been murdered in his sleep. Kate and police think his wife is responsible until their daughter mentions ‘Mara’. Mara is just one term for what’s known as a sleep demon. In the end they find out Mara is to blame for his death and that she feeds of people’s guilt.
Afterwards I decided to look into this a little deeper. I was surprised to find out that quite a bit of the history behind this is true and people all over the world suffer from sleep paralysis and there have been many sightings of dark entities associated with this. The first clinical description of sleep paralysis was published back in 1664.
Sufferers wake up paralyzed and unable to move with the feeling of a dark presence around them sometimes even hearing voices and whispers. They have also claimed to feel as if someone was sitting on and crushing their chest which causes them to have difficulty breathing. Some even have sensations of being dragged out of bed and feel tingles or numbness throughout their body. These experiences must be as terrifying as this movie. If you enjoy horror movies I would definitely check this one out!
