All children grow up relying on and trusting their parents. We can never imagine our parents as being human themselves or being anything other than perfect. As we grow up we slowly realize our parents are capable of making mistakes and not being completely transparent. That is the hard lesson that Katie Gregory learns about her family after an incident that takes place at her family’s cabin.

Since Katie was young her family would pick up her best friend Lulu at her home and she would join the Gregory family for summer fun every year. When the girls are in their teens they spend their summer infatuated with the same boy named Jack. One night Lulu catches Katie and Jack sharing a kiss and feels betrayed. She runs off and things aren’t really the same between them for the rest of the evening. The summer ends and the girls go their separate ways.

A few months later Lulu accuses Katie’s father of rape while they were on vacation that summer and Katie believes she’s just trying to get her back for kissing Jack. Katie is quickly swept up in a world of lawyers, court dates and defending her father who couldn’t have possibly done this horrible act. Katie was in the room with them the entire time the alleged incident takes place and claims nothing happened. Her father is found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison and Katie’s life is changed forever. Some years later Katie lives in New York and is patiently waiting for her father’s release. She takes a trip to the lake cabin to prepare it for her father’s homecoming. As she cleans up, she starts finding boxes of documents that gets her questioning what really happened between her father and Lulu.

After some investigation and confronting her father, the truth comes out and it’s life altering. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone I know. I couldn’t stop reading and I felt terrible for Katie. She was stuck in the middle of the story she was told by her family and the truth. She’s stuck between her family and her best friend. Did she defend the innocent party or the guilty one? You will need to read and find out!
