Seraphine Mayes is a very persistent, stubborn young woman and without these traits she never would have been able to find out all her family’s secrets. She grows up at her family’s home called Summerbourn with her twin brother named Danny and her older brother called Edwin. When she’s in her twenties she recalls rumors from childhood from the village that her and Danny may not be who they appear to be. Her memory is sparked by a picture she finds and here starts her investigation to find out the truth about her past so she can better understand her present.
The book begins right after her father passes away from a tragic accident. While going through some of his things she finds a picture from the day her and Danny were born. In the picture is her mother, father and only one baby. Her mother sadly commits suicide when her and Danny are only a few hours old but in this picture her mother looks calm and happy. She finds out that they had a live-in nanny at the time. The au pair was named Laura and Seraphine starts to suspect that Laura knows more about the circumstances behind her birth and her mother’s suicide. She tracks her down and things start moving very quickly.
The information that she is provided by Laura is shocking. This is a story about betrayal, secrets, love and the fact that family isn’t always about blood. The four people involved in the deception behind this family was very intertwined and unbelievable. I would recommend reading this book to find out the mystery behind the Summerbourne twins and the journey they take to find out the truth whether they want to or not.
